State Center Closing

Fort Wayne Journal Gazette
October 25, 2005

FORT WAYNE, IND. -- The end of the Fort Wayne State Developmental Center will be felt long after its doors close in 2007.

While there are and have been good people who have worked at the center, its reputation is one of neglect and abuse rather than providing exemplary care for people with severe mental retardation.

So the state will rely on community-based organizations, both non-profit and for-profit, to provide case management and residential services to former residents of the center. The sentence followed terms outlined in a plea agreement, which also dismissed another charge of neglect.   Read more...

Attention Shifting To Life In The Community. By Jennifer L. Boen

Fort Wayne News-Sentinel
November 10, 2005

FORT WAYNE, IND. -- There are many success stories of people who once lived at the Fort Wayne State Developmental Center or another state institution and who now live in the community.

Deanna Wilber, 65, lived at several state institutions before moving to the center, where she lived 1984-90. She now lives in a ranch home on Fort Wayne's northeast side with nine other adults with developmental disabilities. Only the multiple cars in the driveway give a hint on the outside that it might not be a single-family home.

"I like it here," she said, noting that sharing a room with only one other person is better than living in the dormitory at the center. In recent years, however, center residents have been given private rooms of sorts. Dormitory rooms were partitioned with partial walls.   Read the full article at the Fort Wayne News-Sentinel Archives. Note: There is a $2.95 fee to view articles in the archives.
